Security Screen Maintenance: What You Should Know

3 minutes read

Properly maintaining your security screen is vital to the life and look of the product. While the Tensile-Tuff stainless steel mesh (used by Crimsafe on every security screen we manufacture) is highly resistant to corrosion, it’s important to keep up on appearances, so to speak.

Mesh of any kind has the ability to trap dirt and impurities, and our Tensile-Tuff is no exception. Over time, the continual entrapment of such debris can result in your security screen having a stained appearance.

How Dirt Build Up Happens

Crimsafe mesh is made from 304 Grade stainless steel. Alone, this make of stainless steel has a lifespan of 65 years, and that’s approximate. Before it leaves our factory and heads to your home, our mesh is coated with a high-grade durability powder.

This powder is UV fade-resistant and enhances the finished Crimsafe product. The powder pre-treatment must remain intact, as it will keep the mesh from rusting. However, it won’t be able to stop the deterioration of your security screen without your help.

Obviously, security screens are located on the outside of your home, sometimes installed in front of a door, window, or, sometimes on their own. This leaves them unprotected from the elements outside.

The typical culprits in these situations are salt and moisture. While moisture and impurities in the air result in reddish marks, salt will appear as fluffy white marks. The severity of the issue will depend on your proximity to the ocean.

Fortunately, Crimsafe can help. When you have your security screens installed, your technician will be able to go over your location with you and provide you with the proper steps of caring for your security screen.

How To Care For A Security Screen

There are steps you can take that will protect the original pretreatment powder on your security screen, as well as avoid the buildup of impurities in the air. We must highly recommend that you do them, as it will keep your investment in a like-new state and that failure to comply with the recommended care guide will void the product warranty. Depending on your environment and location, the frequency at which you’ll have to clean your security screen will vary.

To get the most out of your Crimsafe Mesh Security Screen, be sure to include the wash down of frames and mesh as part of a regular maintenance routine. You can use the wash and wax that we supply at Crimsafe, or you can use store-bought car wash and wax. Either one will get the job done.

Conduct the wash down with a soft, non-abrasive brush, and follow the process with a wipe down using a fresh, soft cloth and clean water. If you use strong, solvent-based, or abrasive cleaners, the factory-applied protective powder can easily become damaged.

Crimsafe is always available to answer any questions you may have about keeping your security screen in perfect condition. We want you to get the best out of your screen, so feel free to give us or your Crimsafe dealer a call.
